1. What is Genetic Material?

Imagine your body as an incredibly complex machine, and every cell within that machine is like a tiny factory. Genetic material is the blueprint, the instruction manual, that tells each of these factories exactly what to do, how to build every part, and how to operate. It’s what makes you, you – from the color of your eyes to how your immune system fights off illness. This incredible material is primarily DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, and sometimes RNA, or ribonucleic acid, especially in certain viruses.

Think of DNA as a long, twisted ladder, a “double helix,” made up of smaller units called nucleotides. These nucleotides come in four types: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and thymine (T). The order, or sequence, of these A’s, T’s, C’s, and G’s along the ladder forms a unique code. This code holds all the information needed to build and maintain an entire organism.
